A Step-by-Step Guide for Purposeful Instruction

There is no question that all students need to be immersed in real-life examples of the types of writing they are asked to produce. Planning a unit of study allows educators to meet this goal; they’re able to engage students in relevant, meaningful writing by strategically providing the necessary time, structure, and guidance for students to grow as writers.

Join nationally-acclaimed author and literacy consultant Stephanie Parsons* and improve the effectiveness of your instruction through planning units of study.

This “do at your own pace” online course is designed for K-6 teachers,  literacy coaches and administrators.

  • Transform curricular standards into an applicable unit of study.
  • Discover an array of mentor texts that provide students a clear vision of the writing they are expected to do.
  • Gain teaching language and specific writing strategies to lay the foundation for student learning and curriculum development.
  • Learn assessment techniques to inform the design and on-going “in the moment” decisions of your teaching.
  • Join an online community where you can submit your unit of study for feedback, as well as participate in a one-hour webinar with other educators from around the globe.
*Stephanie Parsons is the author of multiple books centered on curriculum development, as well as a co-author with Lucy Calkins of Units of Study. After attending Yale University and Teachers College at Columbia University, she taught at P.S. 321 in Brooklyn. She is now a reading and writing staff developer working with schools in New York City and across the country.
