5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning
No one questions that excellent instruction is the key to student learning. The question we ask is: What skills will enable school leaders to improve the quality of teaching and learning for all students?
There’s no magic bullet to improving student learning. The key is the quality of classroom instruction. We realize how critical it is to provide leaders and teachers with the skills necessary to support excellent classroom practice and we also know that this work needs to be thoughtful, intentional and focused. It is for this reason that CEL’s research-based 5 Dimensions of Teaching and Learning (5D) is comprised of the core elements of what constitutes good teaching. CEL’s 5D professional development is customized to meet the specific needs of school leaders and teachers. Some components of this professional development include:
- Overview Session - A one day training designed to engage participants in their learning about the 5 Dimensions and 13 Sub-Dimensions. Videotape clips of classroom instruction, examples of student work, and collegial conversations are used to guide participants as they practice using each Dimension as a lens for analyzing classroom practice.
- Guided Walkthroughs - A CEL facilitator leads a series of classroom guided walkthroughs so that participants can practice using the 5D framework within the context of their own school and district. Participants will gather evidence of teacher practice and student learning to assist in their analysis of classroom instruction and their identification of strengths and needs.
- Leadership Coaching – Personalized coaching extends learning and helps inform instructional leadership decisions within a school and district. Leaders will learn how to provide feedback to teachers regarding classroom instruction and will analyze data to plan professional development with a goal to improve student learning.
Unlike most other instructional frameworks, 5D is accompanied by a sophisticated assessment to measure improvement in teaching and learning—specifically by measuring the growth in leaders’ expertise. To learn more about CEL's 5D Assessment, click here.

“If I were still a building administrator and could only afford one PD during 2009/10-- this would be it. I am confident, based upon 30+ years of doing and observing, this PD would provide the biggest return on the investment through a real and measureable positive impact on instruction and learning.”
